This film, made in 1956, clearly reflects the time and the sentiments that many Americans felt towards Communism. While I don't necessarily agree with the portrayal of Communism as an evil entity that will turn Americans into dull monsters, it is clearly effective. Or, at least, as effective as a "B" movie can be, considering the lower budgets. I think that the film could easily translate into the feelings that many Americans unfortunately have about any other kind of outsiders, infiltrating our country (immigrants, for example). I thought the film was creepy and fun to watch overall, especially when the main character breaks the fourth wall. It's hard to imagine that there wasn't some subliminal messaging there directed at an audience susceptible to anti-Communistic sentiments, so that line is targeted and intended to scare the audience into fear. I wonder if any of the actors were outright anti-Communists or Communists or if they just saw the movie as art!

It's a fun watch, but not the highest art of cinema. The film's main value is in its treatment of politics, showing how propaganda films can be extremely effective.
